Employment Overview

The Hamilton Police Department offers a challenging career as a law enforcement officer. Testing and hiring are done as needed to fill positions.

The hiring process consists of several steps:

  1. Written and Physical agility testing.
  2. Completion of application packet
  3. The applicant will be contacted by the department and advised if and when an interview may be scheduled.
  4. Background investigation.

Current Salary and Benefit Information: (As of January 2008)

First Year Base Salary: $17.32 hr / $36,025 yr

Annual 1% longevity raise

Union Contract Negotiated Annually

Vacation - 120 hours per year

Sick Leave - 96 hours per year

Health Insurance - Includes medical, dental, and vision

Retirement Plan - Employee contributes 6.9 percent of gross income, employer contributes 6.9 percent. Mandatory enrollment through Public Employees Retirement System (MPERS) vested after five years of service. (Retirement plan will change to MPORS 20 year retirement as of 07-01-08)

Uniform Allowance - Each probationary employee is paid $1,500 as a one time allowance toward initial acquisition of uniforms and equipment. After the first year officers receive an annual allowance of $1000.00.

Unemployment Insurance

Additional compensation includes shift differential and overtime compensation. Compensation may vary due to rate changes and contract negotiations.

Minimum Qualifications:

U.S. Citizen
21 years of age

High school diploma or equivalent (college degree preferred)

Eligible for MT driver's license

No convictions for which imprisonment could have occurred in a federal or state penitentiary

Good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relation with supervisors, co-workers and the public

Interpersonal and problem-solving skills

Willingness to work with community
